Expansion of Piñon Canyon Maneuvering Site by U.S. Army
Better Pueblo Position Paper Opposing Any Site Expansion
By: Board of Directors
Summary: Better Pueblo Board approved this position paper opposing any expansion of the Pinon Canyon maneuvering site by the U.S. Army. Full text follows. [10/22/2007]
Text of full article:
Better Pueblo opposes any expansion of the Piñon Canyon Maneuvering Site in Southeastern Colorado by the U.S. Army because it is unnecessary for the nation’s military and the nation’s safety, unjust to the residents and/or ranchers that would be displaced by such expansion, unsustainable for the future development of all the areas of Southeastern Colorado, both environmentally and economically, and that we believe it is particularly detrimental to the future of Pueblo County and City.
Furthermore, we support the efforts of Members of Congress, Representative John Salazar and Representative Marilyn Musgrave and Senator Ken Salazar for any and all efforts to stop further expansion. We offer our solidarity to those in the region leading the opposition to the expansion.
We commend the efforts of Congressman John Salazar for a well written letter to the Army articulating reasons for opposition to the expansion and agree with its contents.
Better Pueblo will help educate on this issue during the coming year and advocate opposition in venues and ways according to the opportunities that arise.
[The draft Better Pueblo position was approved by the Board by consensus on October 22, 2007 prepared by the Secretary as directed by the Board for review and editing by the Board members.]
